The Spanish settlement of Villa de la Vega was founded in 1534 as the capital of the Jamaica. It was also called Santiago de la Vega or St. Jago de la Vega. The indigenous Taino lived in the area for around a thousand years prior to this, but this was the first European colony in the south of the island. When we English conquered Jamaica in 1655, we renamed the settlement "Spanish Town".
