How did the barbarians become extinct?

The Romans said "barbarians" to mean anybody who spoke a foreign language, just like Americans say "rama lama ding dong" for anybody who doesn't speak English. The actual name for all tribes east of the Rhine River was Germanicus, and we now call them Germans. That does not mean the nation of Germany, which was created in 1947. It means all people from The Netherlands to Hungary.
