Look carefully at the picture. The ability to get over the impediment to escaping or the ability to find freedom or the ability to leave the past and rise above it and move forward i.e., potential opportunities was waiting right there to be used.

Instead the person broke out the rungs of the ladder leading to opportunities for a few minutes of fire. Basically threw away a possible better future.
