If you part your hair on the left, does that mean the part is on the left side of your head and, therefore, most of your hair is swung over to the right side?
Or does a left side part mean that most of your hair is on the left side of your head, leaving the part on the right side?
The "part" is where the hair has to part ways. One hair goes this way, another goes the other way. Most people part on the left side because they are right handed. Some people part in the middle just trying to look different and managing only to look like they sing in a barbershop quartet.
