What does it mean when you get two court dates, one before sentencing and one for sentencing ?

My father has recently got arrested and they kept changing his sentencing date from the 12th to the 21th of December. Later on they say he sees the judge twice, once on the 12th (today) and once on the 21th ( sentencing date) what does this mean?

Probably means that he has a hearing and ten the judge ales all te facts and makes a decision and gives it on the 21st. Sometimes cops don't show up to court so if he's lucky he will just have to go for the hearing.
