Design is the most important part of a motor. There are several kinds of dc and ac motors and you just have to learn how each of them responds to changing inputs. Trying to explain operation requires some pictures and a bit of time, but once you understand how an ac motor works, a question of this sort is just silly because a motor is designed for only one frequency.
