I sometimes hear people mention this number relating it to a negative situation. Is there any real explanation that is factual?

In biblical Hebrew and Koine (biblical) Greek, letters were used as numerals, so any word had a numeric value just by adding up all the letters. This practice was called gematria, and it is totally meaningless in any other language.
The bible says when the antichrist appears, the number of his name will by 666. It also says the number has to be counted, so any sort of accidental association means nothing.
You now know more about this subject than most people. BTW you can get a little book titled "Number In Scripture" by E. W. Bullinger that explains a lot of other things that most people don't know. You can download free copies from lots of places.
