What do the Russian names Karnofsky and Panofsky mean?
I would like to know the meaning of the surnames Karnofsky and Panofsky. I understand the suffix -sky or -skii means 'of...' And google says panof панов means 'gentry', but I don't know if that's correct. And I can't find anything on the name Karnofsky. Could someone please help?
Firstly, the suffix -sky or -skii don't always mean "of..." (only if surename bigins with names of people: Ivan (name) - Ivanov (a person whom father or grand-father was Ivan), Aleksandr - Aleksandrov). Secondly, there isn't word "карн" in Russian and the srename Карновский is very rare! I think «карн–» is borrowed. But with Пановский I can help you! Пан is an old name of Poles, so Пановский is a person whom grand-grand-parentes were from Poland.
