The underlying cause of WWI was a resurgence of imperialism but the immediate trigger for war was on June 28th 1914 after the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the throne of Austria-Hungary by Yugoslav Nationalist Gavrilo Princip in Sarajevo.
