What cause the depletion region?

depletion region, in a diode, is caused due to the pairing up of electrons from n-side of the diode with holes in p-side of the diode...since these two move in opposite direction, even when voltage is not applied, they form an immobile charge carrier region(which does not support in conduction electricity)...that ionized region is called depletion region.
