Before I retired, I worked for several employers and several bosses.
Some employers and bosses are just satisfied hiring a person to do a specific job and nothing more - often times, this employee is never thanked for the work they do.
Some employers and bosses like to hire people who want to advance, with the company or business. These employers and bosses give these employees more opportunities, recognize the good work they do, offer them classes to advance and praise them a lot.......all of this - is called 'motivation'. When a person is motivated - they do a better job, they ask for more work to do, they ask about classes and opportunities to advance..........this is all great for the employee's ego too because they feel like 'someone cares'.
