Maple trees? Or do you mean "instead of", if that is the case then any kind of sugar based syrup will do, even honey and in a pinch you can make your own syrup by dissoving a lot of sugar in water and boiling off the water to make a concentrate.
No, but as a substitute in a recipe it will be fine. If you want the maple syrup flavour because it will be the main flavour then you have to use maple syrup. There is no real substitute.
