I am buying a home with ugly orange-ish vigas in the living room and master bedroom. What can I do to give the place a new, maybe slightly more modern look without costing me a fortune?

Why are you buying an ugly house?
A viga is a large rough-hewn timber that supports the roof in an adobe building. It is visible on the outside, not the inside. What you have is an attempt at interior decoration by someone who had no clue to what they were doing.
Don't buy it, unless the price is very good: good enough to tear out that stupid timber and refinish the interior.
Well, there you go: it's an ornament, and all you have to do is tear it out and patch the hole. Not a big deal.
It's a fixer upper, amazing price, amazing view of the city, sitting around 130k in a neighborhood of 250k to 400k houses. It's a great deal and a rarity, which is why we're buying an ugly house. It's an interior viga, not exterior and not an adobe house. Home built in 1998. That's the only thing in the home we dont like.
