3 years ago I start getting a monthly deposit of $50 into my bank account(I used to work at this bank and knew the employees). I called the bank to inform them and was told that I should look into it ( i feel as though since I was a former employee and friends with them they didn't handle my situation properly). So I called the payroll company as well and they couldn't didn't help me based of my information. I continued to get these deposits for 3 years (after a while I forgot about) and finally last week my bank calls me and tells me I owe them 2050 dollars. Although I agree I should start paying it back. I don't feel as though I should have to cover the full cost myself due to the fact that I informed the bank and was told to look into it myself.

Unless you can document your communication with the bank and document your efforts to inform them that incorrect deposits were coming into your account, you should have to pay it all back as it clearly wasn't your money. If you can document it, it still might not matter since clearly the money wasn't yours. This doesn't seem like a difficult situation. You'd like to profit off of someone else's honest mistake. Tsk tsk.
