What are the different of platform software and application software?

Windows is sometimes referred to as a platform. It does not perform any specific task, but it provides a lot of basic things that other programs need all the time. For instance, the application does not need to know what kind of printer is out there, it simply calls a "PRINT" function. Likewise, Excel does not deal with spreadsheets, it provides services for applications that use spreadsheet functions.
