MgO is prized as a refractory material, i.e. a solid that is physically and chemically stable at high temperatures. It has two useful attributes: high thermal conductivity and low electrical conductivity. "By far the largest consumer of magnesia worldwide is the refractory industry, which consumed about 56 % of the magnesia in the United States in 2004, the remaining 44 % being used in agricultural, chemical, construction, environmental, and other industrial applications."[9] MgO is used as a basic refractory material for crucibles.

It is a principal fireproofing ingredient in construction materials. As a construction material, magnesium oxide wallboards have several attractive characteristics: fire resistance, termite resistance, moisture resistance, mold and mildew resistance, and strength.[citation needed]

The magnesium oxide has various of applications. It is usually used in making the metallurgy, smelt, advance magnesia brick, refractory material and the moisturizing material. What’s more, it widely used in the rubber, rubber sheet, rubber products, the pharmaceuticals industry and food industry, the plastic sheets accelerate and fiberglass plasticizer. Of course, it as well as can be used in the surface coating ail paint of silicon steel sheet, the stuffing of paper production, the reinforcing agent, the polishing paste of steel ball, the finishes, insulating material, the grease, dye, ceramic, desiccant, the resin and the fire retardant. Is it enough? Of course no. The real light magnesium oxide still has many other applications. The true light magnesium oxide can be applied to the stuffing of rubber and plastic products, the reinforcing agent, the soft magnetic ferrite, the tackifier, the catalyst of chemical industry and the other magnesium compound. The use of light magnesium oxide is not only these, it is something more. It is also the raw material of enamel, ceramic, glass and so on.
