An economic sector is anything you want to label as such.
The Greek word oikonomia means a household. The English word means management, as in the class called "home economy".
Did you buy something today? Let's say you bought a pencil. What color? What brand? Did you look for a certain pencil or just grab one from a bin near the checkout line? Whatever your answer, you voted for that exact sort of a pencil, displayed in that exact manner. If you take all the purchasing decisions made by everybody in some group or area, that is what we call the economy of that group or area. It is usually measured in the local currency as a matter of convenience, but there is no thing called "the economy", and it is not divided into sectors. All the talk about "the economy" and "economic sectors" and "economic growth" is imaginary. The decisions abut what to buy have strong effects on everybody's life, but you have to remember that "the economy" is not a real thing. It is simply a code word for all the buying decisions taken together.
