Well known companies like Levi, Heineken and Orbit have launched crowdsourcing contests but somtimes the participation in these online contests is realtively low. What could be reasons for that? And how could participation rates be increased in an innovative and realistic approach?

Since most people never heard of these contests, you are asking for guesses. I would guess that most people don't know that Levi is still in business, since their pants are now made outside the country, or maybe they do know and resent that fact. Heineken makes beer and beer drinkers are notoriously uninterested in topics that don't directly concern them. I never heard of Orbit before. If I am correct, these companies have poor public awareness.
