Hi! I have a friend whom I have noticed often formulates rather racist sentiments, though with a positive angle. As an example 'I really love the hispanic nose!' or 'to me black people and white were MADE to reproduce together'. While the sentiments are well meant, the way they are said often becomes reductive and trivialises histories of racial oppression. I know I've read articles about this form of racism and wanted to send some material to her, hopefully by an author who can express the sentiments in a better way than I do (since it doesn't appear to have an effect) but I can't for the life of me remember the term used to designate this particular form of racism. Can anyone help me in this? Do you agree with my line of reasoning in wanting to intervene?
No, no. I know her well and she's definitely not being sarcastic or joking. I'm not the only person to have reacted to it in our circle, so I don't think its something I'm conjuring up.
As a matter of fact, she often uses it as a reaction to racism. The comment about black and white people being made to reproduce, for instance, was a response to someone speaking about what it was like growing up in South Africa during Apartheid.
