I'm not that religious, but I think on the first day He created the world and day & night. Second day He created the sky. Third day He created land and plants, named the water 'sea'. Fourth day He created stars, the moon and the sun. Fifth day He created fish and birds. Sixth day He created all other living creatures. Seventh day He rested.
Genesis 1:1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.
"In the beginning," get it? No six days, it was in the beginning. Some other things happened and the earth became without form and void. Then came the six days of repair, not creation. God does not create again until verse 21.
It might interest you to know that there were eye witnesses to what we mistakenly call creation. They recorded their observations as best they could, carving some records into stones and passing verbal accounts from one generation to the next. It has taken a very long time to interpret these records because they don't describe anything we have seen. For example the legend of the dragon is carved into rocks all over the world, but it is only recently that anybody has noticed a natural effect that fits that description. This is a long book because it tries to cover everything completely.

The actual time of creation of the material heavens and earth may have been billions of years ago. Genesis 1:1,2 relates to a time before the six "days"
1. Light; division between day and night Genesis 1:3-5
2. Expanse, a division between waters, beneath the expanse and waters above it. Genesis 1:6-8
3. Dry land; vegetation Genesis 1:9-13
4. Heavenly luminaries become discernible from earth Genesis 1:14-19
5. Aquatic souls and flying creatures Genesis 1:20-23
6. Land animals; man. Genesis 1:24-31
These creative " days" were much longer than 24 hour days. The Bible often use the term "day" to describe an extended period of time.
