Was Gandhi Successful when trying to improve the lives for others?

alls i know about Gandhi is that he wanted to end violence by starving himself. or something similar. the wikipedia might have better information on him. search "Gandhi - wikipedia" wiki isn't always correct but allot of the time it is.
