Verizon - If I end my contract and my phone is not payed off what happens?

I brought my own phone and paid off the contract completely and they still turned it over to a collection agency for a few more bux. I told them I didn't owe anything and to stop bothering me. Verizon sent a letter and I returned it with the same message. And that was the end of it.
