I know he was in ww1 in France. His mother was Cherokee Indian, and had birth issues. Grandpa had a sister named Bertha Sampson, her son Kyle, was the nephew of grandpa. Hughie was married 2 my grandmother,Marie Allison, from Littlerock,Arkansas. They had 6 children together while living in Detroit, MI. They owned a home at 1706 Calvert Detroit, MI 48206.Marie Lewis was born 3/15/1915 died 5/20/1993. Can u please hep me? His ssn was 374 14 0520

You have quite a lot of information already, which definitely helps. To find out about his own ancestry, you can use the US censuses. To find out military history, I only know how to do it for UK soldiers (my great great grandfather and his brother were both in France for the Great War, both in the battle of the Somme). If you can use something like ancestry.com to find a regiment, you should be able to get a history of that regiment and see their movements across France.
For me, what helped most was what we call MICs in Britain, or "medal index cards". That helped me track them down and get their regiments and service numbers.
