To what extend is the effectiveness of solar water purification?

I only know one process that might be described as "solar". You dig a shallow hole, put a cup in it, and cover it with black plastic. A rock holds the plastic to a point above the cup. The sun heats ground water, it condenses on the plastic, and drips into the cup. If you are reduced to collecting water by this method, it's pretty certain that you will die.
