...and secure it and now I can't get the lid off. Is it airtight or did the rubber melt to the glass? Either way, how do I get it off?

Apparently some new styles of candles have been developed. I had to look up images, and after a while I found this:

So if that is what you have, there is a bit of a vacuum inside. You are going to have to put the jar in boiling water to raise the pressure inside. Then you can wear gloves and remove the top. That also melts the wax, so expect to spill some hot wax in the process. You might prefer to just toss it and buy another one.
I bet you don't make that mistake again.
