I planned a trip out of the country for the week immediately after graduation and was to start the following Monday. I did, however, contact one of my managers prior to leaving to ask about what I would need for my start date and notify them I would be gone. She then proceeded to tell me I needed three letters of reference for their records, and I would need them by the end of my first week. So she let me know less than two weeks ahead of time that I would need three letters of recommendation, and I was leaving the country the following day. I didn't want to stress about this while I was on vacation, as I haven't had a vacation in four years of college. I contacted people at the beginning of this week but have only heard back from two so far, as I'm sure many professors are traveling and enjoying their summer at this time. Not to mention, I feel horrible and unprofessional having to ask for letters on such short notice. The thought actually crossed my mind to write and sign one of the letters myself (not from a professor, but a close family friend or something). I don't want to be a person who does this, but I also feel it is unfair of the company to require three letters in such short notice, especially when I was offered the job in April. Isn't this something that should happen before/during the hiring process? Would it be rightful of me to ask for more time to obtain legitimate letters of recommendation?
