"The width of a rectangle is 3 less than its length."
x = y - 3
P = 2(x + y)
" if the length is multiplied by 2 and the width is increased by 4, the perimeter is now 50."
P = 2(x + 4 + 2y) = 50 Now substitute #1 for x.
P = 2(y - 3 + 4 + 2y) = 50
2y - 6 + 8 + 4y = 50
6y = 48
y = 8
x = 5
