If the ratio of staff to children is 1:4 then for 4 children, 1 staff is required or for 8 children, 2 staff is required. The main this to be kept in mind is that the number of children divided by the number of staff must be 1/4
Therefore number of staff required for 50 children is
1/4*50 = 12.5
Hence the number of staff required must be 12 or 13

The unknown number of staff needed for a known lot of children, well, lets call it x.
Then the Question is:
1/4 = x/50 | expand : left side times 1 (in the form 50/50), right side times 1 (in the form 4/4)
50/200 = 4x/200 | both sides times 200
50 = 4x | both sides divide by 4
12.5 = x
