Do you know what you are talking about? GPS means "Global Positioning System" so your use of the word 'system' a second time is redundant and meaningless.
GPS was designed as a military tool to aim missiles accurately and to navigate boats and airplanes. In 1983 an American airliner got off course and the Soviets shot it down, so GPS was opened up to civilian access, but accuracy was limited to 50 feet. Later that limit was dropped so now scientists can measure land movements in centimeters.
