For example: With less wit (i.e., common sense) than virtue (i.e., with one's heart in the right place), he opened a hostel for down-and-outs.
The adjectival expression "with less wit than virtue" has come to me, but I don't remember how?

What I'm asking is: Have I invented this adverbial expression, or is it just that I've forgotten where I came across it?

What exactly are you asking?
Re: the hostel. Without much intelligence the person opened a place for down and out people implying unemployed and poor. If they have no money how does he afford to keep the hostel open (pay for the building, taxes, heating, air conditioning, laundry and food) for them.
Exactly, M.!
However, I'm not into Welfare with my question, just wondering if I myself invented the expression, or just forgotten where I picked it up.
