I plan to take one of his scratching posts and he leaves my furniture alone for the most part but I do not want him to damage their leather furniture. Any advice?

If you aren't going to be gone longer than a day leave it home. If longer than a day, put it in the bedroom where you are going to sleep, unplug electric cords, put carrier with door propped open with soft blanket so it can snuggle and hide. Put food, water and litter box and toys and keep the door shut. A bunch of loud people is scary to a kitten. A new house where it doesn't know any of the smells is scary to a kitten. Do not let it walk around at your parents. The home is not kitten proof and if it gets stepped on you need an emergency vet or if scared and hides up inside furniture like a recliner it can get killed or it will be hours until you find it. Keep it in that bedroom preferably with one of your shirts to sleep on so it has your scent and feels safe.
