So I just found out the certificate of occupancy for my building is dated back to 2008 .. I don't know If that's a bad thing or does it really matter. Can someone tell me are those things like permanent or should they be renewed ?

To my knowledge, that certificate just means when the building was completed an inspector went through and made sure all work complied with laws and that the area was suitable for human occupancy. Unless there has been some serious building remodeling that would require reinspection I don't think another one is required. You could call the dept who issued it and confirm that.
