...  vehicle with small payments from mine car. or I can use my down payment purchase a lesser expensive car having no payments and continue on making payments on my wife vehicle.
 What should I do?

You could pay off hers and then get you one for lower payments i don't see why that wouldn't work you could even use as a down payment with less payments on the one you put the down payment.
