I can't figure this question out, i have been stuck for weeks!! My lecturer is... not as useful as i would have hoped... any insight would be nice. I am trying derive this equation from first principles to prove that it does in fact = 1. Yet apparently is more to do with a^2 + b^2 = c^2 ; than with calculus.

This can only be a spelling mistake. First, it is sin, not Sin. Get out of the habit of hitting Shift just because you start a new line. A math program will not tell you that you made a mistake, it will just give goofy results. Second, there is only one case where sin^2.x =cos^2.x =1/2 and that is when x=45 degrees.
And third, it is sin^2(x) although nobody else seems to know that.
