Significance of hard water?

Generally there is no risk to humans in terms of drinking hard water, but hard water does make certain things more difficult (like getting soap, shower gel, or washing up liquid to foam). It also causes problems with plumbing and industrial use of water.

I live in a country where the water has been deemed "very" hard for most cities and many people artificially soften their water for practical reasons rather than health reasons.
