Diamonds are used in hundreds of industries from abrasives to drill bits but there is a LOT of diamond around. The idea diamonds are rare is an illusion created by the DeBeers diamond monopoly to increase the price of diamonds. There is no need to conserve them as we can produce industrial diamonds our selves from carbon and even potatoes!!
Platinum is different, it is expensive and rare, it does need conserving. It is now becoming economicall viable to harvest road surfaces for the platinum oxides depositied from car exhausts such is the value of platinum. Cars use platinum as a catalyst to clean the engines exhaust gasses.
