I want to write a story about something that has happened (and is happening) to me and some of my friends. I don't know if I should do it and say it's a true story (with fake names, of course), or do it and make it mostly fiction (but if the people in the book read it they'd probably be able to tell they're in it), or just not write it at all

It's not unreasonable. These things happen, and one must find a way to cope somehow. Libel leans towards having the character act in a manner which is unsuitable for their real persona (or self image).
I'm not sure,you tell me: one of the character's dad dies, and they're dog. And in my book (this part is fiction) they get depression.
