My violin is a $250 Toyama (I don't even know what model it is) and I have been using it ever since I needed to change to a full-size violin which was a couple years ago. It does have a bright tone, but I think G is too flat and E is too sharp and thin. In April next year, I will be having my grade 6 exam.
Should I upgrade my violin beforehand or wait until grade 8 exam? And do I actually have the need to upgrade it?
I play violin too!! From what I know, a good violin would usually start from anywhere around $450 or so. If you are sure that you won't quit violin suddenly and that you do enjoy playing it I can't see why wait 'till gr.8 exam if you are going to upgrade it anyway. I do recommend you tho, don't jump to those extravagant ones; intermediate violin that cost anywhere around $700 should be sufficient enough. Good instruments always help you learn faster and probably make playing more enjoyable :)
