I am very interested in following the course, but I've read an article that said I should NOT study it because it isn't enough to find a job. It makes me feel very conflicted and would rather hear multiple arguments, good or bad, preferably out of experience.

Sinology is the academic study of China primarily through Chinese language, literature, and history, and often refers to Western scholarship. Its origin "may be traced to the examination which Chinese scholars made of their own civilization."

I don't know any reason to study that, but if you do then go right ahead. It certainly has nothing to do with doing business there, since there are more English speakers in China than in the USA. Your time would be better spent studying Latin. For one thing, you are a lot more likely to meet someone who speaks Latin.
