I'm not willing to play Skyrim so soon, so i was wondering, should i play The Elder Scrolls? and if so, which one?

Skyrim is the fifth elder scrolls game and it is already nearly 4 years old (released on November 11, 2011, for PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360) so I don't really understand what you mean by saying you're "not willing to play Skyrim so soon". It is not a modern game, at least not compared to others available now. Also if you are intending to play any of the elder scrolls game series Skyrim is probably the one you want to play as it is the best of the series.
You really really won't miss anything, they all operate as stand alone games and the quality of the early ones is really nothing like as good as skyrim is simply because of the advances in tech rather than the quality of the games themselves.. that said the story in the early games was also limited by the tech available. I've played most of them and it's like comparing doom with Far cry. If you really want to know the background you can read all about it online. IMHO you'd be wasting your time playing the back games before playing skyrim but I do know that some people like to play games from 1 throught to whatever and if that is what rocks your boat then go for it, I just don't think it's worth it. Either way happy gaming and enjoy it whenever you get to play it, it's fantastic :)
What i mean by "Not willing to play Skyrim so soon" is that i haven't played ANY of the Elder Scrolls game series and i'm not willing to jump ahead that far.
