Theme is the topic or idea that the story is trying to explain, discuss or operate through, it is similar to genre. Setting describes the location or area that the story takes place in. For example the Harry potter book's themes include magic, witchcraft, wizards, mythology, fantasy, mystery, crime, etc, etc while the settings include, Hogwarts castle/school, London, The Ministry of Magic, The Dursley's house, etc, etc
