I know this is a cliche but I did see something. I was walking home from the store, and saw... something just resting in the sky. It was perfectly still, it had no clear shape or color to it. I couldn't see any real detail, the sun had just set behind the mountains. This is the second time I've seen something in 2 years. But I haven't told anyone I know for obvious reasons.

I never said it was aliens, and it definitely was not light shining on moist or cold air I know what that looks like and I've seen that before. This was a solid object hovering just above the city. I'm not sure if anyone else actually paid attention to it.

Hovering above the city? Then it could have been a mirage effect if there was a strong temperature differential between the city and the air above it. Cities have something called a heat island effect and this has been known to cause atmospheric mirages.
I know you never mentioned aliens and that it was a serious question, sorry if I unintentionally pushed a button.

Yes, it could do that. I've seen coloured mirages, not just the 'water' ones when driving like dark blobs hovering over the road surface. The same thing can happen over cities, especially if they have a lot of glass/metal surfaces that focus and concentrate the heat. If this happened in your case I'm not 100% sure but it is an explanation and place to start. Perhaps a chat with a friendly physicist could help? My physics doesn't really extend beyond essential Uni courses and that was 20 years ago :)
actually that makes since, what I saw a few days ago looked like a dark brownish blob just hovering and it disappeared in less than a minute. Atmospheric Optics does make since in this case.
So I guess I've only seen one actual UFO not two. The other UFO I saw about 2 years was 3 lights fixed in a perfect triangle shape and the sky behind it even disappeared a little when it slowly moved over my friends house. I was the only one who saw it and have never told anyone I know, only people online. I know a helicopter when I see one and it definitely wasn't a plane formation. Based on what I've read online there are quite a few people who've seen UFOs in our area in the last year or two so at least I'm not the only one.

The triangle of lights in the sky UFO was a common sight in many american cities until police and fire departments revealed they'd been trialing drones. I'm sorry to tell you but that wasn't a UFO either. The occlusion of the sky was probably caused by the large rotors on the drones, larger than the ones generally available through hobbyist drones. The engines are electrical too so make virtually no noise and they do not look like helicopters at all.
I can tell you the lights were not drones. Those quad drones cannot fly in a perfectly fixed triangle formation and block the the sky behind them. I happen to be an aviation fanatic and I know drones and helicopters when I see them, the craft I saw was not a drone. If you were there with me you would not say it was drones.
I wish I could, all I can say for sure is it had a dull red/brown color with some black on it. it didn't have a shape I could describe easily. The camera on my phone isn't good enough to record that kind of video so I didn't even try.
