... few large ships heading upstream to Portland. On previous visits to this beach I have observed the rolling waves of the ships wakes crashing on shore after the ships pass but this time I observed something else. There was a woman sitting waist deep along the shore. As the ships approached and drew abreast of our location the water receded leaving her high and dry. Of course as the wake rolled in after the ships passed the water came chest high on her but I have not noticed the water receding before. I would like to know more about the fluid dynamics that cause this action and if possible see a model or diagram of the process
