We are getting a puppy and would like to crate train him but I have read you cant just shut the door which makes sense as you don't want to scare him but how do you secure him overnight if you can't. Shut the door any advice would gratefully be recieved

How big is the crate? If it is big enough for the puppy to stand up and walk around in, you should put something inside of the crate, like a large piece of cardboard in the middle. If you do that, then the puppy won't go to the back of the cage and have an accident. Instead of putting a pillow in the crate, use a towel. Puppies like to get up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom. If you have a pillow in the crate, you won't be able to hear it moving around. Also, try NOT to give it food or water 2 hours before bedtime, it will have an accident! And, cover the crate... If you do this, the puppy should go to sleep and not whimper as much! Good luck!
The better way to make them safe is using a crate. You may keep them inside the crate over the night as well as the time when you are out of your home and let them go when you will come back. Make sure that the crate is much larger so that your puppy can sit and walk inside that crate. You may use a towel instead of a pillow inside that crate. Thanks for the conversation.
