You should be able to download patches to update your copy of the game. The expansion should list the requirements, both software and hardware wise for the game. Also, most expansion packs install the update patche(s) themselves.
You can run expansions but you will have to update your game. Some expansions are bundles that contain the base game and one or two expansions. They are the same price as some of the other expansions on origin.com.
