I had a homework assignment in which we were supposed to define like 40 words. I copy and pasted the definitions from college sites and dictionaries, which I think are public domains (not sure). I both quoted and cited my sources. Though I did not have any original work. Is this plagerism? If it is will it end up on my school record and what are the consequences? I am a high school student (junior) in the US.

Hiya. Although I am from the UK, I have done some research for you and yes, this is considered mild plagiarism however in my opinion, you will absolutely fine. I am assuming the words assigned had some straightforward definitions and if not, then I am sure if you had even slightly rephrased it, it would have made little difference in comparison to the copied definition. As for the consequences, considering you did quote and cite your sources in order to make it clear to your teacher that this isn't original work, this was a very good decision as it is much better than getting caught. Therefore, I can only predict that your may get a few questions or perhaps a small scolding comment but honestly, I think you are going to be ok! I hope my opinion counted!
