Phones - How do I free up storage space on my phone?

First of all - is it iPhone or Android Phone like Samsung, HTC etc.
Both systems offer a lot of space optimizers, even free ones. Check an AppStore or GooglePlay Store accordingly.
Check on background apps that running and keep the amount as minimum as possible.
Delete unused apps - they might be installing updates that eats up your storage space.
