1) Could be 'b' or 'd' though 'd' is a lot more formal. I think it would be best with: "After entering the new school, he began to make friends more easily"
2) Mr. Jones would rather have stayed home last night. None of those options really suit the sentence. Unless 'b' is supposed to be 'have stayed'.
