When you first moved in with them, was rent discussed? Did they ask you for any money of any kind? If not, then you are not really obligated to pay them anything, as they could have just been helping a friend in need. They can't just say, "oh yeah, and by the way, can you pay us some rent when it's time for you to leave?" Now if they did expect you to pay rent, and you previously agreed, then it would be the honorable thing to pay what you had agreed to. Just because you're not legally responsible, doesn't make it right to skip out on an agreed upon promise. If they push the issue and want rent when you had never discussed or agreed to it, maybe they could get in trouble with the landlord for subletting the apartment.
