The house I am in originally had an upper deck which is now a bedroom. The room underneath it which was previously a partially unfinished basement is now a finished basement with concrete and plaster walls. There is not much insulation and there is a set of stairs which lead from the basement to the upstairs hallway.. this stairway does not have a door at the bottom. We have baseboard oil heat with the upstairs being one zone and the basement being another zone.
I am writing to ask for a recommendation for the setting of the downstairs zone. It is unoccupied and is really only being used for storage.. or when I have to go through it to get into the dirt basement (unfinished part) to view oil level or add salt to water system.... If 72 is a comfortable setting upstairs and the downstairs has been set to 65 (which I just noticed today), what would be the best temperature to set downstairs at? Or, do I even need to have the heat on? I am asking because I am concerned about heat efficiency and obviously what would be the most cost effective...I live in NY ..

Thank you,
C
